The world of modular synthesis may seem a status symbol, a class statement - for those with deep pockets and endless patience. But the word for music is "playing" it - and the secret is, patching is a lot of fun. Wiring up sounds can lead to weird and beautiful new noises and complex, shifting modulations, until you forget what time of night it is. So let's strip away the barriers and start in a way that's easy - and free.
Bring your laptop, and try out VCV Rack, an open source rack platform. Learn how to set it up, learn some basic (and some more far-out) patches, and learn how to record and work with your studio, plus where to learn more. See a quick overview of other similar tools you can use. Plenty of time will be allowed for hands-on time and questions.
Required materials:
Laptop computer running macOS, Windows, or Linux
(Older or slower machines or OSes may not work; make sure your headphone audio drivers are working. See installation and system requirement instructions at https://vcvrack.com/ and install in advance if you can!)
You can now sign up through the Networking App Limited seats available - book yours at Agenda. Even if the workshop is full, you can go to the workshops table 15 minutes prior to starting as there are always last minute cancellations.
