We have reached the end of the era of ‘user centered design’ as defined by data extractive companies seeking to feed their customers with addictive hits to pleasure centers, viral misinformation, or conveniences built on unregulated labor conditions. Instead, we have entered an era in which systems and communities are the focus, and applications rich with discoverable complexities extend capabilities to participate and collaborate to users in many contexts simultaneously, regardless of demographic and technical literacy. This is the era of urban scale computing, where software infrastructure provides services in the context of society as a whole, and is shaped by local governance and the values of the culture that it serves.
How does one design services and experiences in this new paradigm? Ben believes one approach might look something like game design, where the designer is sculpting a whole narrative universe that overlays a new grammar of use onto familiar landscapes, providing a semantic model for AR, immersive, and situated or gestural interactions. He will lead participants on a journey of infrastructural imagination, where potential services are identified, metaphors mapped, and multiple roles and experiences are envisioned.
