Conversational AI has become ubiquitous, and it is enhancing experiences at home, public
spaces, during commuting and at leisure time. Speech, as a Human-Computer Interaction
modality driven by the human voice, detonates new creative paths to interaction designers,
sound artists and musicians.
In this MasterClass, Jorge del Bosque will present an introduction to Voice User Interfaces
(VUIs), their main technical components and the multidisciplinary fields driving the scientific
research agenda on speech interaction.
On the practical side, he will demonstrate a variety of tools, programming libraries and
machine learning techniques to design conversational experiences, produce synthetic voices
and understand language automatically. With the use of these tools, interaction designers,
musicians and sound artists will be persuaded not only to use human or artificial voices as
audio signals but also to extract and utilise the sentiment, meaning, grammar, concreteness
and abstractness inherent to human language. The session aims to inspire creative
technologists to experiment with the reviewed techniques and tools to develop their own
voice user experiences and combine them with sound and music production tools.
