Claire Tolan, computer programming and artist

Claire Tolan is a computer programming and artist from the US and based in Berlin. She researches digital infrastructures and internet communities. Her investigations brought her to a unique YouTube community: the one devoted to ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response). This community is composed of creators and fans who share binaural sound recordings (and videos) reporting that listening to those pieces produces a tingling sensation in the scalp and the spine. Many users also report a relaxation sensation.

As an artist, Claire Tolan has produced several pieces using binaural audio recordings, both videos and performances, and even a radio show called “You’re worth it.” She also collaborated with Holly Herndon for her Platform LP.

Besides ASMR, Claire Tolan has worked as a web programmer for the Tactical Tech Collective, and currently, she is one of the developers at the cooperative streaming platform Resonate.

Her knowledge about the technology, recording, and binaural listening; and the behavior of the ASMR communities, make Claire the perfect person to ask if we wonder about the future of listening.
