A brand new event at the crossroads of technology, creativity and music is coming to Barcelona in February 2020. In parallel to 4YFN and GSMA MWC at Fira Montjuïc, xside opens its doors to the general public for 3 days and 3 evenings, from 11am to 11pm, becoming the world’s biggest after-work event with special speakers such as Richie Hawtin, industry discussions, live demos, startup creative sessions, immersive installations, food trucks and bumpercars, followed by DJ sets that best exemplify creative approaches to making and playing music.
All this makes xside a totally unique environment for networking and entertainment, encouraging connections between businesses and individuals.
With more than 50 speakers on stage, xside will provide a series of conferences that will challenge and redesign the way we think, create and act around the themes Creativity & technology; Entertainment beyond the screen; Design for 2030; Innovating for truth and trust.
Pivotal contributors driving major changes in technology culture, entertainment and experience, will step on the xside stage such as the revolutionary NYC art group Meow Wolf with Sarah Brin as creator of programs, exhibitions, and publications for organizations like Autodesk, SFMOMA, British Council, MOCA Los Angeles, the European Union and the Award-winning House of Eternal Return; Matt Jones, Principal Designer at Google AI, currently working to bring human-centred on-device AI to Google Hardware including Pixel2 and AIY projects; Catherine Bischoff, Chief Relationship Officer of Factory Berlin, Germany’s largest community of innovators and entrepreneurs and a leading voice in the city’s start-up ecosystem; Laura Tenenbaum, award-winning innovator in science and climate communication; and CEO & Founder of NOVAMEAT, Giuseppe Scionti, will be talking about the cutting-edge technological solutions that his company uses in order to feed the planet’s growing population with plant-based foods.
Other confirmed key speakers include Jordi Orteu, Executive Director of EMR, an eSports company founded and headed by FC Barcelona’s player Gerard Piqué specialised in promoting competitions, broadcasting, and creating eSports content; Catherine Turp from the Canadian multimedia entertainment studio Moment Factory, using the most powerful new technologies to engage audiences in collective experiences; Collin Lyons and Helen Fuchs, from the design studio Ustwo, known for the game "Monument Valley"; and Arnold van de Water from the Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum, showcasing the use of groundbreaking platforms to present the legacy of the important modern painter for new audiences and spaces.
As part of the first generation of creators using emerging disciplines like Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and big scale projections, xside key speakers include as Robin McNicholas, from Marshmallow Laser Feast; Josue Ibáñez, Mexico's Cocolab Co-Founder and Interaction Design Director; and Todd Eckert from Microsoft collaborators Tin Drum, creators of the first ever mixed reality performance piece by legendary artist Marina Abramovic.
The innovative potential of games beyond entertainment will bring speakers on stage to share the world's most important studio for augmented reality mobile games, Niantic, the company behind the already legendary “Pokemon Go”.
Covering more topics of interest, xside will also touch on opportunities for the tech industry to innovate with new systems to gauge the trustworthiness of a source with Isaac Marcet, founder of one of the best-known digital media in Spain, PlayGround, a leading title in the field of music, trends, film and multimedia inventing its own kind of journalism.
Immersive Entertainment Experiences
The xside Immersive Area will showcase interactive installations by artists and designers working at the cutting edge of technology and creativity.
Broomx will set up a mini dome to showcase their cutting-edge technology system MK Player360, which integrates an immersive projection system with a cloud-based content distribution platform to access a full catalog of immersive and interactive content anytime, anywhere. Part of the Abbey Road Red acceleration program from Universal Music UK, their fully immersive and social VR experience gives people a fascinating sense of immersion in real spaces.
Innovative company Paraddax specialised in the large scale entertainment sector will be showing LedPulse Dragon O, a three-dimensional LED screen formed by thousands of pixels, that incorporates neural LEDs, real-time interaction, and compatibility with the Resolume vj software.
Independent studio based in Berlin IMRSV Arts will be showcasing a biometric VR installation by placing heart-rate sensors on the participants, collecting heart data from loneliness, fear, and happiness that will anonymously contribute to a collective visualization.
Also participating in the xside Immersive Area will be Futura VR Studios, with the large-scale multiplayer game “Here Be Dragons”; the immersive storytelling experience studio, META NYC will present Unreality for the first time, Antiloop/Univrse studio who specialize in shared and collective immersive VR experiences; and Protopixel, the platform that allows agencies and design professionals to create from the cloud for a broad range of retail, hospitality and entertainment businesses.
From the stage to the dancefloor: xside Night
Starting at 6pm, xside Night will take over each of the 3 evenings, adding in more talks and some of the world’s best DJ’s sets to the mix, starting with electronic music pioneer Richie Hawtin, who will be taking the stage to share his experience as the inventor and creative mastermind behind a number of game changing projects over his long career. Berlin-based electronic music composer Ben Lukas Boysen, whose practice takes in installations, feature film scores and experimental sound art, will offer the demonstration 'Live Visual Creation', joined by digital and new media artists Joëlle Snaith and Joshua Davis.
Following the different talks, the dancefloor will invite the general public to dance the night away to the sounds of DJ Folamour - one of the most relevant producers of the new French house and funk scene - dropping a set of funk and soul tinged music; Jamz Supernova, with her tour of trendsetting sounds from global urban scenes; iconic house music DJ and fashion icon, Honey Dijon; and nu-bass trailblazer DJ Awwz. xside Night will close with a very special performance by downtempo electronic legends Kruder & Dorfmeister, backed up by forward thinking visuals from Vienna studio lichterloh tv, whose innovative and expansive lighting design, makes this live AV show the perfect fit for xside.
