Sónar+D Open Call: Take part in the Sónar+D Innovation challenge, Datathon edition

9/10/2020

The Sónar+D Innovation Challenge (SIC), co-organized by the Music Technology Group of Universitat Pompeu Fabra is the platform for rethinking the future of creative technology, based on the open collaboration between companies and talented creators from different fields. Companies propose challenges to creators and collaborate to produce disruptive prototypes to present them at Sónar+D.

This years’ challenge, with a ‘datathon’ format, has been posed by the music analytics platform FuturePulse, an EU-funded project that draws on data from the most popular social media services, streaming services, music monitoring services, and, combined with machine learning and advanced analytics, predicts trends in the growth of artists, genres, playlists and more.

The Challenge: Predictive Analytics for the Music Industry

Early detection of trending artists is the ‘holy grail’ of the music industry. To this end the selected teams will be tasked with creating models and solutions for identifying early popularity trends in music (artist, songs and genres ), and for predicting how trends will develop or evolve, in specific demographics or influence groups

Participants will be asked to:
  • Use available data from the FuturePulse platform’s API, to identify trend signals in up and coming artists. These could be based on song position movement, social media activity or a combination
  • Consider factors that could influence this ‘tipping point’ in specific social groups or demographics
  • Deliberate on how these models could be incorporated into existing digital service providers API’s and user interfaces

Applications can come from anybody with a focus on the following professional roles:
  • Data Scientist
  • Machine Learning expert
  • Backend and/or Data Engineer
  • Front end Engineer
  • UX/UI Designer and/or Researcher
  • Biz Dev / Marketing / Music Business Expert

Two teams of 5 people will be formed and the team that presents the most innovative and interesting outcome will be rewarded with a 1.500€ cash prize, with all selected applicants receiving Delegate Passes for Sónar+D 2021.

Following the application process, the challenge will run for two weeks from November 2nd, with all the teams receiving mentorship and support from the FuturePulse consortium.
The results will be presented in a public online event on November 18th.

The call is now open until the 23rd October. Good luck!
