The results are in! Today we’re delighted to announce the 10 successful applicants of the Sónar+D x Factory Berlin Artist in Residence program, supported by Beats by Dr. Dre and Institut Ramon Llull. Now in its second year, AIR 2.0 provides atelier space at Factory Berlin, advice and top level professional mentorship for creatives to develop specific projects, with a selection of the resulting work to be shown at Sónar+D 2021.
This year saw over 200 applicants from 25 countries take part, submitting proposals in the fields of Computational Creativity and Human Machine Collaboration, Exploring new Formats and Applications for Forward thinking Music, Building Creative Businesses and Creating Experiential Content.
Starting now and for 3 months, each of these trans-disciplinary artists will develop their project, receiving mentorship from 20 industry insiders from companies and institutions including Twitch, Change.org, Patreon, S+T+ARTS, shesaid.so , The Fader, Electronic Beats, MHP, New Inc, Gropius Bau and the Berlin Club Commission.
Below, in alphabetical order are the 10 selected creatives, with an outline of their practice.
Aaron Jablonski, exitsimulation.com. A visual artist and creative technologist from Germany, works with augmented reality, CGI and experimental video. Past projects include AR filters for Dazed Beauty and for the band 1975.
Cora Novoa, coranovoa.com. A composer, DJ and electronic music artist based in Barcelona, her artistic practice straddles the line between art, music and fashion design, as evidenced by her label/studio/platform SEEKING THE VELVET. This residency is supported by the Institut Ramon Llull, as part of their internationalization program.
Dejha Ti & Ania Catherine, operator.la. An award winning, LA based artist duo whose practice merges environments, performance and creative technology. Drawing on dance, performance art and HCI (Human-Computer Interaction), their work is defined by nuance within scale.
Harriet Davey, instagram.com/harriet.blend. A 3D Artist, Graphic Designer, and AR creator based across London and Berlin. Her work examines and interrogates the ugly and the beautiful; the maximum and the minimum; the online and the offline, ultimately questioning what it means to be fluid and human in a digital world.
Lucas Garvey, lucasjgarvey.com. Straddling the worlds of typography, print design and digital and analogue modes of creation, Garvey’s design practice creates satirical ‘solutions’ to modern social issues. His past work has tackled issues such as social media anxiety and addiction.
Moises Horta Valenzuela, moiseshorta.audio. Sound artist, technologist and electronic musician from Tijuana, Mexico, working in the fields of computer music, Artificial Intelligence and the history and politics of digital technologies. His project hexorcismos, addresses the politics of colonization, occupation and alchemy in the context of electronic music and the sonic arts.
No Shade, noshade.eu. 12 multidisciplinary artists, technicians and producers make up the Berlin based No Shade collective. Founded as a training program for female, trans and non-binary djs, their work currently expands to sound and light design, merch and events production. During their residency, No Shade will present and work on their new video production and channel project ‘No Shade TV.
Sebastian Lee Philipp (Die Wilde Jagd), diewildejagd.com. A highly acclaimed and accomplished Berlin based musician and artist, Lee Philipp’s music has been licensed to major fashion brands and TV series including Hermés, Lanvin, Killing Eve and Treadstone.
Studio Above&Below and Einar Fehrholz, studioaboveandbelow.com. A London and Ruhr based art and design practice founded by Daria Jelonek (DE) and Perry-James Sugden (UK). Their work combines XR, computational design and digital art in order to draw together unseen connections between humans, machines and the environment. During their Residence, Studio Above&Below will work in collaboration with Einar Fehrholz, soundcloud.com/einarzuviel (Oberhausen, Germany), a sound artist and musician whose field of work includes club related electronica, spheric sound-installations, musical compositions and sound design for films.
Tony Cruise, prelude-agency.net. Tony Cruise is a sound artist who cultivates ideas for musicians, institutions, and brands - including scoring film, sound and instrument design, and consulting as well as the development of special projects such as software, books, installations and limited-run merchandising.
