The festival announces the first names of its musical program, which includes: Helena Hauff, Black Coffee, Ólafur Arnalds, Bicep, Lorenzo Senni, Wiley, Kode9, Mueveloreina and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra playing the work of Terry Riley "IN C". Sonar Barcelona will take place on the 14th, 15th and 16th of June, 2018.
Guests of honour
British band Gorillaz - founded by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, will see band members Murdoc Niccals, Russel Hobbs, 2D and Noodle present their long awaited new show, featuring a stellar line-up of special guests, more than 5 years after their last concert in Spain. The Barcelona premiere of the new show will feature songs from Gorillaz' acclaimed new album "Humanz", as well as their most popular hits. LCD Soundsystem return to the festival just one year after their glorious come back and will perform songs from their latest album "American Dream". Sónar by Night will also feature two men who know the festival intimately and will play primetime sets: Diplo, one of the electronic music scene's most important personalities over the last 15 years, with one of his impressive dj sets; and Bonobo, performing for the first time at Sónar by Night, having already become an essential international electronic music artist.
A special mention for two artists closely linked to the history of Sónar who could not miss out on this year's festivities: Richie Hawtin will present his show CLOSE, allowing him to transmit the live relationship between man and machine via several cameras and screens; and Laurent Garnier will offer one of his spellbinding four-hour sets to close the festival on Saturday night.
Present electronic perfect
Sónar 2018 will also feature numerous talented artists hitting peak form and helping shape today's music scene: Lorenzo Senni, the ever evolving trance de-constructionist; Helena Hauff, currently considered to be one of the best djs in the world; the veteran musician Daedelus will present a highly conceptual and technological show at Sónar by Day; Francisco López, fabled sound researcher and explorer will test the limits of sound; and Irish duo Bicep, who have risen to the top of the clubbing world with their excellent debut album.
Urban rhythms and beats in the sunshine
Urban rhythms deriving from hip hop and beats from around the world will be championed by Wiley, the godfather of grime, who will also make his Sónar debut armed with one of his best works to date, the recently released "Godfather" album. Joining him, a new breed of talent including British DJ Jamz Supernova, producer duo Jarami (collaborators with Frank Ocean), Portugual's Nídia (a mainstay of the Principe Records label), Barcelona's Mueveloreina and Rels B (both rethinking hip hop and trap forms) and Sweden's Dinamarca, with his scintillating take on bass music. Also of note, incorporating dance friendly house structures, are artists like the extraordinary African dj Black Coffee, who will close out one of the three days at Sónar by Day, George FitzGerald (presenting a new live band), and electronic pop duo Maribou State.
More contemporary than classical
As always, Sónar, 2018 will offer music at the intersection of classical and contemporary production and composition processes, a space dominated by the likes of Icelandic Ólafur Arnalds, who will perform at Sónar by Day. This will also be reflected by the Sónar Concert being held at l'Auditori, in which the Barcelona Symphonic Orchestra (OBC) will interpret one of minimalism's most important pieces: "In C", by the celebrated Californian composer Terry Riley.
Digging In The Carts: Video game music performed and re-interpreted at SonarDôme by Red Bull Music Academy
Red Bull Music Academy joins the 25th celebration with an advance of their program based on 'Diggin in the Carts', the project celebrating Japanese video game music. Kode9 brings a VGM-inspired performance with visuals by legendary animator Koji Morimoto, composers Yuzo Koshiro & Motohiro Kawashimaperform classics from games like Streets of Rage live, with visuals by Konx-om-Pax, and DITC 音 plays favorites from the genre's rich history. The lineup also features Portuguese DJ Violet x Photonzand Swedish trio Studio Barnhus. Iconic DJ and Jersey sound figurehead Tony Humphries plays a house set inspired by the golden era of New York radio.
