Taking his inspiration from the architectural characteristics of the pavilion – in which there is no clear delineation between the inside and outside – and by Arteaga’s piece, which brings the sound from outside to inside the building, Capece aims to do the opposite: take the inside to the outside.
To do so, he will make recordings inside the pavilion on the days prior to his interventions. These recordings will be made by placing microphones inside cardboard tubes of different lengths. Thanks to the phenomenon of resonance, a “drone” – or sustained sound – is obtained, which varies depending on the length of the tube used and the angle of the room where the recording is made.
With this audio content, Lucio Capece will create a piece that will combine the various sound frequencies in the room and play then through a speaker system in two different sessions:
The first intervention, with which Capece wants to reflect the work done by Alex Arteaga inside the room on the outside, will take place from 7am to 8am on 18 June. He will place a speaker system floating in the outdoor pool, on the walls of the pool and in the air, suspended by helium balloons. This is a way of bringing the architectural interior to the exterior.
On the same day after a break – between 9am and 10am – he will perform another intervention outside the pavilion, based on the swimming pool space and the surrounding area, playing with the dimensions of the pool and the volume of water it contains, in order to represent the architectural exterior itself.
The same interventions will take place on Friday 19 June, but in reverse order, matching the indoor-outdoor sound transition to the transition from day to night and vice versa. The two interventions on Friday will take place in the evening, from 6pm to 7pm and from 8pm to 9pm.
