transient senses

A sonic reflection on Mies van der Rohe Pavillion

Alex Arteaga’s sound installation transient senses is part of a collaborative project between Sónar+D, the Fundación Mies van der Rohe, Goethe Institut of Barcelona, Fundació Tàpies  and the Art and Design Research University Máster (Eina and UAB) and the Fundación EINA. The piece, which has been produced specifically for the Pavilion, has been conceived as a sonic reflection on its architectural nature. Despite its marble walls, the Pavilion acts as a series of interruptions and transparencies of the space. Light, air and sound cross it. The installation transient senses plays with this auditive transparency of the architectural space. Is it possible to narrow or widen walls by sonic means and make them acoustically translucent? The installation uses Omniwave speakers by Bloomline – a pioneering model of speakers equipped with a convex membrane instead of the usual concave membrane, which disseminates sound in an almost spherical wave. Transient Senses will be presented to the public from 29 April to 21 June.

The installation transient senses uses Bloomline Omniwave loudspeakers, a pioneer device with a convex membrane instead of the usual concave membrane, spreads the sound in an almost spherical wave.

During Sónar+D, on 18 and 19 June, Lucio Capece, musician specializing in experimentation in the perceptual link between sound and space, will make four interventions (two per day) with floating and flying speakers supported by helium balloons moved slightly by propellers, in the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion. He will use the installation transient senses as a means for sound experimentation, and the fundamental concept of it to work the ambiguity between the outside and the inside, from the outside.

“transient senses_lab” is an international research seminar that takes this installation as its starting point. It will focus on the current state and future prospects of research in art and design, and among those attending will be renowned experts in the field including Jean Paul Thibaud (sociologist and co-director of The International Ambiances Network), Rudolf Bernet (philosopher), Xavier Bassas (philosopher), Gerard Vilar (philosopher) Alex Arteaga (musician, architect and philosopher) and Lluís Nacenta (specialist in design, sound art and experimental music).

Organized in collaboration with the Eina University Master’s Degree in Art and Design Eina and the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Berlin University of Arts. The event will take place on 18 and 19 June in the Sónar+D area.

Cycle curated by Lluís Nacenta.

Collaborating partners: Einstein Foundation, Institut Français, Bloomline, Neumann.

Access to this installation is free for Sónar accreditation, pass and ticket holders. General audience can access the installation buying a ticket for 5€
