STEMS is a new multi-channel audio file format launched by Native Instruments that will introduce a completely new way to DJ. A Stem file contains a track-split into four individually accessible musical elements: bass, drums, vocals, and melody for example. With each element available separately, the DJ can mix and apply effects in ways that were never possible before.
STEMS was developed as an open format designed to benefit the entire music industry. DJs and producers can create their own Stems with the free Stem Creator Tool. From summer on, anyone will be able to create, perform with, and distribute Stems. At the same time, software and hardware developers can access the code and specifications to integrate Stems into future music production and performance tools.
