The Nøtel is the result of the collaboration between musician Kode9 and visual artist Lawrence Lek. The show is based on the songs of ‘Nothing’, the latest album by the Scottish producer, a work inspired by voids, absences and stalemates. Those elements from the album coexist in their live performances with spectres, holograms and eerie sceneries designed by Lek. The German creator has conceived simulated architectures using video game development software, suppressing interaction and putting the spectator in an exceptional position as an observer of deserted spaces and automated rooms that keep functioning when not a vestige of civilization remains.
Kode9 is the most popular facet of Steve Goodman, DJ, producer, head of Hyperdub label and currently one of the music prescribers with better instinct. Less known is his academic side as researcher in subjects such as the use of sound as a weapon in military, civil and cultural contexts, analysed in his book ‘Sonic Warfare’ and in the transdisciplinary research project AUDiNT. When he was PhD student, Goodman was member of the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit (CCRU), a group that combined philosophy, journalism, science fiction, occult and other less orthodox studies for the academic world.
Lawrence Lek describes himself as an artist of simulation. His work is crystallised in videos, installations, video game environments and performances, often reflecting an important anticapitalist critique. Trained in architecture and sculpture, works like Bonus Levels make him one of the most influential artists and scenic designer nowadays.
Steve Goodman and Lawrence Lek will be interviewed by Lisa Blanning, journalist specialised in electronic music, culture and digital art. She has written for publications such as The Wire and Electronic Beats, and led panel discussions regularly for events such as Unsound, CTM and Atonal. Blanning is currently editor-in-chief at Platoon Magazine.
